Sony HT-CT150 3D Review

The Sony HT-CT150 is one of the superior values for money home theatre systems out there offering excellent connectivity options. It is one of the few systems that have managed to strike a perfect balance between price and sound quality.

The Design

The Sony HT-CT150 is not conventionally designed. That is to say it doesn’t follow the normal design convention of a long cylindrical bar like most other sound bar HT systems. The subwoofer is connected to the sound bar and is powered by an external AC source. The subwoofer unit also houses all inputs and the amplifier making it somewhat of a hub. This leaves behind a very small sound bar unit measuring in at 31.5×2.63×2.38 inches.

The speaker arrangement on this system could have been better. The subwoofer being wired limits its range of use from the sound bar. Sony’s OEM speaker cable is just about 9 feet long. Additionally, Sony has included the IR sensor on the subwoofer instead of the sound bar. This can be a hassle as it requires the subwoofer to be in the line of sight of the user to enable efficient control of the system.

The remote control of the Sony HT-CT150 is a rather complex unit. The look is not pleasant with too many buttons giving it a somewhat messy look. Weighing in at just over 2.5 pounds, the Sony HT-CT150 is a very light device and is easily wall mountable.

Device Setup

The Sony HT-CT150 lacks a speaker calibration feature but the sound bar’s center channel and subwoofer’s volume can be fine-tuned separately. The subwoofer has a small LCD screen through which the menu can be operated.

The system has treble and bass controls, Dolby Digital DRC and even night mode options. The last two are helpful to decrease the lively volume swings present in movies.

Connectivity Options

The Sony HT-CT150 is excellent when it comes to the number of connectivity options it has. The unit has 3 HDMI inputs, something which no other system boasts of at the moment. For the price it sells for this is almost luxury like. Even discounting the HDMI, the other connectivity options are pretty good. The unit has three digital inputs and two stereo analog inputs which are adequate for all the non-HDMI connections one can imagine.

The Sony HT-CT150 has six input labels, meaning the maximum number of devices that can be operated with this system is six. This is in spite of the system having more number of total inputs. The HT-CT150 supports Dolby and DTS decoding.

Sound Quality

The Sony HT-CT150’s sound quality is praiseworthy. Clarity is pretty good. The bass kicks in deep and is healthy thanks to the subwoofer. However, blending of the sound bar and the subwoofer is outstanding. Soundstage depth is quite acceptable and so is the surround sound effect. For such a small unit, the system is capable of producing impressive levels of volume.

Summing it Up

The Sony HT-CT150 is a worthy successor to the HT-CT100 and impresses with its connectivity options and excellent sound quality. This makes it a truly excellent value for money purchase in this price segment.
